AZ eventually beat nine-man FC Groningen 4-2 after extra time. The Eredivisie high-flyers looked to be heading out of the competition thanks to David Texeira's fifth-minute goal, but substitute Nick Viergever's 76th-minute equaliser forced the additional 30 minutes. Niklas Moisander needed only three minutes of extra time to put the hosts ahead and then, after the visitors had had Tim Sparv sent off, Adam Maher gave AZ breathing space with a third goal. Groningen substitute Tim Keurntjes swiftly halved the deficit but Johann Berg Gudmundsson soon restored the Alkmaar side's two-goal cushion before the away team were further depleted by a red card for Jonas Ivens. Thursday evening's other second-round tie required a penalty shootout to separate third-tier Achilles 29 and Eerste Divisie Telstar Ijmuiden, the former advancing after a 1-1 draw. Gerson Sheotahul had put Telstar ahead in the 23rd minute only for Achilles captain Peter Hendriks to get the Topklasse leaders back on level terms 10 minutes before the break. There were no further goals in the 90 minutes or in the additional 30, with the hosts going on to edge a tense shootout 2-1.
