Atletico Madrid extend Diego Godin's contract

MADRID - Atletico Madrid says defender Diego Godin has agreed to add another year to his contract, tying him to the Spanish club until 2019.

Since his arrival in 2010, Godin has helped Atletico win the Spanish league, the Copa del Rey, the Europa League, and reach the Champions League final. The 29-year-old Uruguay international's most memorable goal was his header in a 1-1 draw at Barcelona to clinch the 2014 league title in a dramatic winner-takes-all finale on the last round of the season.

Atletico opens the 2015-16 Spanish league season against Las Palmas on Saturday.
