UEFA says it has fined Ajax 25,000 euros ($33,500) after fans displayed an ''offensive banner'' aimed at Celtic during a Champions League match.

The banner targeted a religious insult at Celtic, which traditionally draws its fans from the Catholic community in Scotland and Ireland, during Ajax's 1-0 win in Amsterdam last week.

UEFA says Ajax was fined for ''improper conduct'' by fans. The Netherlands champion originally faced a ''discriminatory behavior'' charge.

Ajax faces a second disciplinary hearing at UEFA next week after Dutch fans ripped up seats at Celtic Park when the teams first played last month.
