TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona senior linebacker Jake Fischer moved from outside linebacker to middle linebacker just a week or so ago, and he's quickly found a home.
On Monday, the Pac-12 named Fischer the Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded a game-high and career-high 13 tackles -- including 2.5 for a loss -- and forced a fumble in Arizona's 24-17 overtime win over Toledo on Saturday.
"It's an honor, but there are so many things I could have done better," Fischer said at Arizona's weekly press conference on Monday. "I'll just try to improve on those things and become the best player I can be."
Arizona is preparing for Oklahoma State on Saturday at Arizona Stadium.
As for the position switch, Fischer said he prefers the new one.
"I like being in the middle of the field and making all the calls," he said. "I did it in high school. I prefer it."
He enjoys just being on the field, too: Last year, he sat out the entire season with an ACL injury.
Somewhat surprisingly, Arizona's coaches named sophomore safety Jared Tevis their top defensive player. In his first career start, Tevis had eight solo tackles and four assisted tackles.
UA quarterback Matt Scott was named the conference's honorable-mention quarterback of the week by the College Football Performance Awards.
Scott had a career night against Toledo, going 30 for 46 for 387 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime. He also rushed for 74 yards.
The Wildcats finished with 624 yards against the Rockets, the second-most in school history. UA tallied 691 against New Mexico in 1969.
