EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings, having just finished a 3-13 season, made a key change at the top of their organizational chart Tuesday, promoting Rick Spielman to the vacant position of general manager.

Spielman joined the team in 2006 as the vice president of player personnel and has spent 21 years as an NFL executive with the Lions, Bears, Dolphins and Vikings. He will oversee all football-related activities, including continuing to direct college and pro personnel programs.

"This establishes the organizational structure that will lead to the long-term success of the Vikings," Vikings owner/chairman Zygi Wilf said in a statement. "Having watched Rick over the years, we have the utmost confidence that he will help us reach our ultimate goal of winning championships."
