The 33-point whipping at Florida State was the worst loss in coach Roy Williams' nine years with the Tar Heels. It was the worst defeat for the Tar Heels since a 96-54 thumping by Maryland in the 2002-03 season in coach Matt Doherty's last year with the Heels.

The worst defeat administered to the Tar Heels was a 45-point blistering by the Lynchburg Elks back in 1915. In more modern times, Carolina's worst loss was by 42 points to Kentucky in the 1949-50 season.

--The Tar Heels, who had a season-high 22 turnovers, had a season-low eight assists against FSU. Usually, sophomore G Kendall Marshall has more than that all by himself. Marshall, who came into the game averaging 9.9 assists a game, finished with only four, a season-low, against seven turnovers, a season-high.

Freshman G P.J. Hairston had three assists and junior G Dexter Strickland, who was playing on a bum ankle, one, to round out the team's total.

BY THE NUMBERS: 37.3 -- The Tar Heels were only 22-of-59 from the field against Florida State for a season-low 37.3 shooting percentage.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES

--at Virginia Tech, Jan. 19

KEY MATCHUPS: The Hokies have been competitive against the Tar Heels in the past but have been inconsistent this season. G Erick Green was their leading scorer, and freshman F Dorian Finney-Smith was one of the ACC's top rebounders as they entered the week. But the Hokies were missing the physical aspect Jeff Allen gave them inside, not to mention the scoring and leadership of G Malcolm Delaney in the backcourt.

FUTURES MARKET: Junior G Leslie McDonald will sit out this season as he continues to rehab the knee he injured in a summer pickup game. He returned to practice on a light basis in late December but was not cleared to play in games. He will have two years eligibility remaining beginning next season.

PLAYER NOTES

Sophomore F Harrison Barnes led North Carolina in scoring at Florida State with 15 points, but he was only 5-of-13 from the field. He was only 7-of-25 from the field (28.0 percent) in his last two games at that point, after going 34-of-56 (60.7 percent) over the previous four games.

Senior F Tyler Zeller had 14 rebounds to go with his 14 points against Florida State, for his second consecutive double-double and his fifth in his last 10 games. He was in double-digits in rebounds in eight of the last 10 games entering the week.

Junior F John Henson, who was coming off a double-double (11 points, 14 rebounds) against Miami, was in double-figures in scoring with 10 points but had only three rebounds at Florida State.

QUOTE TO NOTE

"I did the worst job of coaching the team I have ever done, I did the worst job of preparing the team that I had ever done, and I have gotta do a heck of a lot better than that." -- Coach Roy Williams, taking responsibility for the 90-57 loss at Florida State.
