Twins put Blackburn, not Doumit, on DL

The Minnesota Twins will place pitcher Nick Blackburn, not catcher Ryan Doumit, on the 15-day disabled list, the team announced Thursday.

Both players dealt with injuries during Wednesday's 11-7 win in Detroit. Blackburn suffered a left quad strain, and Ryan Doumit strained his calf. Doumit, who was the choice to go on the DL after Wednesday's game, is now day-to-day after receiving “favorable medical results,” according to the team.

Blackburn made the start Wednesday for Minnesota but lasted just two innings — his shortest outing of the season. He gave up six runs before exiting, including five in the second inning. After Wednesday's start, Blackburn is 1-4 with an 8.37 ERA in seven starts this season. No announcement has been made yet on who will take Blackburn's spot in the rotation for his next start.

Doumit was 2-for-3 with an RBI Wednesday but left the game after the seventh inning and was replaced at catcher behind Drew Butera. Offensively, Doumit had been solid for the Twins this month. Through Wednesday, he was 13-for-45 with 12 RBI in 15 games in May, including four home runs.

Outfielder Ben Revere has been called up from Triple-A Rochester — initially to replace Doumit but now to take Blackburn's spot on the 25-man roster. The move means that the Twins are now down to 12 pitchers after carrying 13.

Revere has had two stints with the Twins already this season, including four games at the beginning of the season and two in late April when he was recalled to replace Josh Willingham while Willingham was on paternity leave. In 18 at-bats, Revere has five hits and a walk. With Rochester, Revere was batting .330 with a .360 on-base percentage. He had six stolen bases and six RBI in 23 games.

With the addition of Revere, the Twins now have six outfielders: Willingham, Denard Span, Trevor Plouffe, Erik Komatsu, Darin Mastroianni and Revere.
