Time to play a requiem for ousted David Akers
You have to be inhuman if you don't feel a measure of pity for David Akers, who is now looking for work after being axed by the 49ers. Back in 2011, he set the NFL records for field goals in a season with 44. He also connected on the longest field goal in Candlestick Park history (55 yards) and earned his sixth Pro Bowl appearance. The 2012 season started out so well. In Week 1 he made history when he tied an NFL record with a 63-yard field goal against the Green Bay Packers.
But then things started to fall apart. This misses began coming at an alarming rate. Akers' season ended with him hitting just 29 of 42 kicks for a paltry 69 percent success rate. That's not going to get it done ... especially for a two-time first team All-Pro. Yes, he did hit 3 of 3 field in a losing Super Bowl effort, but that apparently wasn't enough for the 49ers to keep Akers around. That's a shame. After all, it wasn't like Akers DID THIS:
Here's hoping the left-footed kicker finds another home.
