TCU adds Big 12 title to list of accomplishments
The TCU Horned Frogs can do no more to add to a resume they hope earns them a spot in the College Football Playoffs.
They feel like they did enough in the first 11 games of the season and Game 12 Saturday against Iowa State was no different.
The third-ranked Frogs (11-1, 8-1 in the Big 12) added the title of Big 12 co-champion to their slate with a 55-3 thumping of the Cyclone at Amon Carter Stadium.
TCU can't control what happens with the other teams vying for a playoff spot or what the selection committee will be thinking before Sunday's announcement. It did know it did all it could Saturday to leave a final impression in a game in which Heisman candidate Trevone Boykin accounted for more than 500 of the 722 yards the Frogs rolled up.
TCU head coach Gary Patterson said he believes his team belongs in the playoffs but he knows that's not his call. The Frogs controlled everything they could Saturday in winning a share of the conference title in just their third season in a Power 5 conference, blowing open a game that was 17-3 at halftime.
"I thought they were little bit too tight," Patterson said of his team in the first half. "I said 'Just go win a championship. Just go play.' That's what I told the whole locker room. Quit trying to think you've got to do this at once and just play. Just go win a conference championship and then we'll let things go."
While Patterson has said he's against style points in the past, TCU certainly did things in a stylish fashion Saturday. Boykin scored the game's first points on a 55-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter, his first receiving score of his career.
He did things in a more conventional manner of then on, throwing four touchdown passes in a less than 17 minutes in the second half. His final one came on his final pass of the game, hitting Ja'Juan Story on a 14-yard pass with 12:34 remaining in the game.
That pass capped a 460-yard day for Boykin in which he set the school's single-season record for touchdown passes with 30, passing Andy Dalton's mark of 27 set in 2010.
The electric Boykin, who will find out if he's a Heisman Trophy finalist this week, hopes the Frogs have done enough to make the playoffs but has no regrets about TCU's season so far.
"I wouldn't be upset," Boykin said. "I'd be more disappointed. We've done everything on our end to be one of those top four teams. At the end of the day we're Big 12 champs and I'm excited about that."
Patterson said he wouldn't be upset if the Frogs didn't make it to the playoffs either but he would be sad for his team. It doesn't look like that's an emotion the Frogs will have to worry about after another convincing showing.
"We knew we'd have to make a statement," Patterson said.
Anyone who saw the third quarter the Frogs had Saturday would have been impressed. TCU scored 31 points, including three passes from Boykin and a 44-yard interception return from Derek Kindred.
TCU had 244 yards in the quarter and had the opportunity to score more points in the fourth quarter but played subs after the final Boykin touchdown pass and took a knee inside the Iowa State 10-yard line with more than four minutes remaining in the game.
TCU limited Iowa State to 236 yards and 13 first downs. The Cyclones (2-10, 0-9) had just 98 yards after the Frogs found their footing at halftime.
Patterson said he's not sure his players will sleep much Saturday night as they celebrate their title. He knows they'll all be watching games those and then watching the selection show Sunday.
They hope they'll be rewarded in that show with a playoff berth that comes a year after a 4-8 season.
"I feel like our schedule and our play, our defense and our offense playing with passion, it shows off," said defensive lineman Chucky Hunter, who had four tackles for losses. "I feel like we're in the top four in the nation. We just knew we had to come out and play hard and the scoreboard will take care of itself."
