TBT: It took Packers' Brett Favre a while to beat them Cowboys
Brett Favre has recently been brought back into the Packers fold, specifically when the team honored him at halftime of its Thanksgiving Day game.
Even though the Packers lost to the Bears that night, it is still better than if they had waited until this Sunday when the Cowboys come to town. Even though a win might be more likely, Favre always had trouble with America's team.
In fact, Favre had a Super Bowl ring on his finger before he could ever say he beat the Cowboys, who tormented No. 4 during the early days of his career.
In 1993, Favre's first year as Packers starter, he lost to Dallas 36-14 in the regular season and then lost 27-17 in the divisional round of the playoffs. The Cowboys won the Super Bowl.
In 1994, Favre lost a 42-31 Thanksgiving Day shootout to Dallas, who was without quarterback Troy Aikman. Current Cowboys coach Jason Garrett started in Aikman's place, and led a rally from 17-6 down to topple the Packers. Once again, in the divisional playoffs that season, the Packers got pummeled 35-9 at Dallas.
In 1995, a 21-6 regular-season loss at Texas Stadium preceded a 38-27 loss in the playoffs, this time in the NFC championship game. The Cowboys went on to win the Super Bowl.
Even in 1996, when the Packers lost just three times en route to a Super Bowl win, they couldn't beat the Cowboys in Dallas, losing 21-6.
If you're counting at home, that's 0-7 for Favre against the Cowboys -- up until 1997, when Favre finally got a chance to host the Cowboys at Lambeau Field.
He took out his frustrations on that Dallas team. Favre was 22 of 35 for 203 yards, with four touchdowns and one interception. Dorsey Levens pounded the Cowboys to the tune of 190 rushing yards on 33 carries and a score.
Favre's one interception was run back for a 50-yard touchdown by Deion Sanders, but even after the game was tied 10-10 at halftime, the Packers outscored the Cowboys 35-7 in the second half and won 45-17.
"We just pounded them," Levens said after the game.
Favre never ended up winning at Texas stadium, but he did exact a matter of playoff revenge with the Vikings in 2009. A 34-3 drubbing at the Metrodome of the Cowboys put the Vikings in the NFC title game, where, in Favre-like fashion, a key interception kept them from going to the Super Bowl.
