PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) -- Philadelphia Phillies starter Roberto Hernandez allowed one hit in three shutout innings against his former team in a 6-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.
Making his first spring-training start of the year, Matt Moore gave up two hits in 1 2-3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and a walk. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first by retiring John Mayberry Jr. on an inning-ending groundout, then retired his first two batters in the second.
Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist was 0 for 2 in his first game since straining a back muscle during a workout on Feb. 19.
The Rays' Jeremy Moore hit a double and homer in the late innings.
STARTING TIME
Rays: Twenty-three of Moore's 37 pitches were strikes. He wasn't happy he got himself into a bases-loaded jam.
"That's not really the situation you want to work out of in your first game, but to be able to have that mentality of, `Get tough right here and leave them standing where they're at' takes a lot of focus, so I was happy to get out of that."
Moore was 17-4 with a 3.29 ERA last year and earned his first All-Star selection. He said his fastballs reached 93 mph Monday, which he was happy with at this point in spring training.
Phillies: Hernandez allowed only a single to Logan Forsythe.
Hernandez pitched for the Rays last season, then signed a $4.5 million, one-year deal with Philadelphia during the offseason. He figures to start the season at the back end of the Phillies' rotation.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Rays: Zobrist is not scheduled to play Tuesday but figures to be back in the lineup the following day.
"I felt great in the field, great at the plate," he said. "Swinging, running, making throws, everything I had to do today felt great. It's a positive step. I feel a couple games behind, but that's it. I won't feel that way at all in a few games. I'll be back to my normal self."
Phillies: Infielder Freddy Galvis limped off the field in the fourth inning after being tagged out at third base. He appeared to roll an ankle before even reaching second base but continued running until the end of the play. His injury is not likely to limit him much in coming days.
OFF THE BOUNCE
Moore and Zobrist teamed for an exciting defensive play in the first inning, though it didn't result in an out. Mikael Franco hit a line drive up the middle that Moore just barely got a glove on. After the deflection, Zobrist collected the ball on the shortstop side of second base and threw to Forsythe at first. Zobrist's throw would have been in time had Forsythe not stepped off the base early.
"It'll definitely wake you up a little bit more than you already are," Moore said. "The fact that he called him safe shook me up a little more. I don't know how I got my glove on that."
COOLING OFF
Philadelphia DH John Mayberry Jr., off to a hot start this spring training, went 0 for 3.
