Three-time WNBA Most Valuable Player Sheryl Swoopes has opted to put the uniform back on after signing a deal to play with the Tulsa Shock, the Tulsa World reported Monday.

Swoopes, 40, has been away from the league since 2008, when she played with the Seattle Storm for one season following 11 seasons with the Houston Comets.

"We are very happy to have this opportunity to work with Sheryl Swoopes," Tulsa general manager and head coach Nolan Richardson said in a press release Monday.

Swoopes led the Comets to four consecutive WNBA titles between 1997 and 2000. She averaged 15.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game during her first 12-year run in the league.

"I'm excited and thrilled for the opportunity to come back and be a part of the WNBA again with the Shock," Swoopes said in the press release.

"With all of my experience and knowledge and everything that I've done over the years, hopefully I'll be able to bring that to Tulsa and help the team win."

Swoopes was a star basketball player at Texas Tech before becoming the first ever player to be signed by the nascent WNBA in 1996. She was also a member of three US women's Olympic gold medal-winning teams in 1996, 2000 and 2004.
