With four weeks remaining in the regular season, the records and rankings for the Michigan State and Michigan basketball teams look shockingly similar.

Michigan State is 13-10 overall, Michigan 14-10. Michigan State is 5-6 in the Big Ten, Michigan 4-7. The Spartans are No. 50 in the RPI, the Wolverines No. 59. Michigan State's strength of schedule is No. 7, Michigan's No. 11.

How can this be?

Wasn't Michigan State No. 2 in the preseason polls, with seven upperclassmen who had made two straight Final Four appearances? Weren't the Spartans even picked to win the national championship by The Sporting News?
