NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops wouldn't comment on the suspension of running back Joe Mixon, but Stoops did name Cody Thomas as the back-up quarterback to starter Trevor Knight.
Thomas is a redshirt freshman from Colleyville (Heritage), Texas, High. He was a four-star recruit by ESPN and Rivals.
The naming of Thomas suggests Blake Bell, moved to tight end from quarterback after last season, is settling into his new position. Bell quarterbacked OU to wins last season at Notre Dame and Oklahoma State, among others.
Thomas is ahead of Justice Hansen and Baker Mayfield on the depth chart at quarterback. The Sooners are still waiting to find out if Mayfield will be granted an exemption and be eligible to play this season. Hansen is a freshman from Edmond (Santa Fe), Okla., High.
