It has been an unorthodox start to the Patriots-Ravens MNF game.  There has been a safety and now an amazing blocked kick.

The New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens are playing in an all-important Monday night game currently. It’s been quite the unique start as the Patriots got on the board first with a safety. The Ravens were seemingly about to score with a Justin Tucker field goal before Shea McClellin leapt over center to block the kick:

Tucker, who is arguably the best kicker in the NFL was a perfect 28-28 on the year before McClellin flew over center to block the kick. Ironically, the block happened just seconds after the announcers mentioned that Tucker had yet to miss a kick on the year.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a player come over top of the center to block a kick. Kam Chancellor, a safety for the Seattle Seahawks, is best known for nearly doing it twice against the Carolina Panthers.

McClellin was originally drafted 19th overall by the Chicago Bears in the 2012 NFL draft. During his first four seasons in Chicago he was largely seen as a bust as the team attempted to convert him from defensive end to linebacker. The Patriots signed McClellin to a three-year deal prior to the 2016 season and he has played a minimal role so far.

While he hasn’t played a major role for the Patriots so far, the team has a knack for converting busts into useable players. It’s still yet to be seen whether the same can be said of their work with McClellin.

The Ravens badly need this win against the Patriots to keep pace with the Pittsburgh Steelers who they trail by a half game in the AFC North. The Patriots on the other hand are sitting comfortably atop the AFC East with a 10-2 record.
