Sharla Rae wins Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks
DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) Sharla Rae overhauled Her Emmynence in deep stretch to win the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks by three-quarters of a length Saturday at Del Mar.
Ridden by James Graham, Sharla Rae ran nine furlongs on turf in 1:46.58 and paid $14.40, $5.80 and $3.40 for trainer Doug O'Neill.
Her Emmynence returned $9.20 and $5, while 7-5 favorite Prize Exhibit was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $2.40 to show.
Ireland-born Graham earned his first stakes win at the seaside track, where he is riding for the first time after many years in Kentucky and Illinois.
''This is a treat for me,'' he said. ''It's a Grade 1. I don't do things by half measure, do I? You need to hang in and have a bit of luck. Then it happens. I'm really enjoying it here.''
The victory, worth $180,000, increased Sharla Rae's career earnings to $436,545, with five wins in 13 races.
