Seattle Sounders midfielder Osvaldo Alonso could miss the first two games of the MLS regular season after undergoing groin surgery.
Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said Monday that Alonso's recovery time is not completely known. Schmid said it could be two weeks before he starts training again, or it could be as long as six to eight weeks before the talented defensive midfielder can get back on the field.
Alonso had surgery late last week in Southern California to remove scar tissue that was impinging on a nerve. Schmid said the team was pleased the surgery was not more extensive.
Seattle opens the season on March 8 hosting New England and is home against San Jose on March 14 before having a two-week break prior to its next league match.
