Royals recall Pounders, Alexander, option Colon, disable Wang

The Kansas City Royals were busy manipulating their roster Tuesday, producing a net gain of one pitcher and a net subtraction of one position player, primarily to support an overworked bullpen when the Royals play the Yankees on Wednesday night.

Gone are infielder Christian Colon, who was optioned to Triple-A Omaha, and reliever Chien-Ming Wang, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right biceps tendinitis.

Replacing them on the roster are relievers Scott Alexander and Brooks Pounders, who were recalled from Omaha. Both pitchers will be in uniform for Wednesday night's game against the New York Yankees.

Colon, who had not been playing a lot lately with Raul Mondesi and Cheslor Cuthbert getting most of the starts at second and third base, respectively, is batting .228 with 10 RBIs in 47 games this season. He is not expected to be gone long, though; he'll probably be recalled when rosters are allowed to expand Thursday.

Alexander, 27, is in his second stint with the Royals this season. The left-hander made nine appearances from May 12-June 5, including a scoreless inning at Yankee Stadium in his 2016 debut. He has made 22 appearances for the Storm Chasers this season, going 2-0 with a save and a 3.00 ERA.

Pounders, 25, is in his third stint in the big leagues in 2016 after making his big-league debut in Toronto on July 5. The 6-foot-5 right-hander has pitched in four games for the Royals, including most recently working two-thirds of an inning at Texas on July 30. He is 5-3 with a 3.14 ERA at Omaha, holding the opposition to a .226 average while recording 90 strikeouts in 80 1/3 innings.
