Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, who said Friday at his introductory press conference that he was hoping to complete his coaching staff by Sunday, has been making progress toward that end.
The Indianapolis Star reported Saturday that Colts offensive line coach Harold Goodwin will be Arians' offensive coordinator with the Cardinals. Goodwin had been with the Colts for the past year after working from 2007-11 as offensive line coach in Pittsburgh, where Arians also was on the staff. Goodwin also served as offensive line coach for the Bears, with whom he started his coaching career in 2004.
While Goodwin will hold the title of offensive coordinator, Arians — who was offensive coordinator for the Colts last year and the Steelers prior to that — has said that he will call plays.
Additionally, league sources told Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic that, as expected, Arians is close to hiring former Eagles defensive coordinator Todd Bowles for the same position with the Cardinals.
Bowles, who has been primarily a secondary coach for various teams since starting his NFL coaching career in 2000, was promoted to DC by the Eagles six games into last season following the firing of defensive coordinator Juan Castillo. He also served as interim coach for the Dolphins for the last three games of the 2011 season, going 2-1 after Tony Sparano was fired.
The Cardinals fired their entire offensive staff at the conclusion of the season, and with defensive coordinator Ray Horton departing Friday, the rest of the defensive staff was let go Saturday, as was special-teams coach Kevin Spencer.
According to the Republic's report, only tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens and strength and conditioning coach John Lott will be retained on the new staff, with Kitchens shifting roles and becoming quarterbacks coach.
