Already in the thick of negotiations for pitcher Cliff Lee, the Rangers reportedly are interested in wading into the fray for free-agent outfielder Carl Crawford.
According to The Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant, the Rangers met face to face with Carl Crawford's representation on Wednesday to discuss the club's interest in the 29-year-old.
If the Rangers decide to make Crawford a priority, he won't come cheap. The former Ray likely will be looking for a contract in excess of the seven-year, $126 million deal that Jayson Werth signed with Washington on Sunday.
Given that, as well as the club's decision to prioritize Lee, the Rangers likely are only discussing Crawford as a potential backup plan in case Lee signs elsewhere.
In addition to Crawford, the club is also in on a number of other free-agent bats, including Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre.
Meanwhile, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser, the Rangers' own free-agent bat, DH Vladimir Guerrero, has been telling the AL West clubs that he is willing to take a one-year deal to sign with any of them after previously searching for a multiyear agreement.
If that is the case, the Rangers could opt to bring him back for another season while devoting all of their attention this winter to the pitching market.
