Report: Josh Gordon to appeal one-year suspension on Aug. 1

The Cleveland Browns could soon know if they will be without receiver Josh Gordon for the 2014 season.

Gordon, who could face a one-year suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, will have an appeal hearing Aug. 1, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

"Browns WR Josh Gordon is scheduled to meet in NYC with NFL officials regarding 1-year suspension he faces on Fri, Aug. 1, per league source," Schefter posted on his Twitter account Thursday morning.

A reduced suspension would be a surprise, given Gordon's recent legal troubles. Since his most recent failed drug test that triggered the suspension, Gordon has been involved in two run-ins with police. Over Memorial Day weekend, Gordon was pulled over for speeding and a passenger in his car was cited for marijuana. He was also arrested in North Carolina on suspicion of DWI in early July.

FOX Sports 1 NFL Insider Mike Garafolo reported on "America's Pregame" on Thursday night that Gordon checked himself into a rehab facility after the July DWI.

Browns head coach Mike Pettine acknowledged the situation earlier this week, saying the team has "no plans" to cut the Pro Bowl wideout and that he expects Gordon to report for training camp on Friday, according to a report from the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

"It is concerning and you want to address it, but until we know where he stands with the league, we don't know really where he stands with us," Pettine said Monday. "I've stated before that we've had the meetings, we've discussed all the options, from the best case to the worst case. And we're still in that mode of waiting."
