Red Sox 'Bullpen Cop' Steve Horgan immortalized with own bobblehead
One of the most memorable images from last year’s MLB postseason featured a person not even playing in the games. When Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz jacked a grand slam during the eighth inning of Game 2 of the ALCS against the Detroit Tigers that led the Sox to a huge win, a Boston cop was in a prominent position as the ball cleared the fence. He then rode his fortunate stadium assignment to skyrocketing fame.
As Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter desperately attempted to bring back Big Papi’s long ball while toppling over the fence, Boston police officer Steve Horgan raised his arms in triumphant exultation, mere feet from a head-over-heels Hunter.
And from that, a star was born.
“Because I’m a Sox fan, I just raised my arms,” Horgan told reporters shortly after his rapid rise to fame.
Horgan, who has been monitoring the Fenway Park beat for more than 20 years in some capacity, admitted shortly after he became an unlikely and instant celebrity that all the attention was “humbling.”
Chances are Horgan experienced similar emotions Monday when the Red Sox honored him with his very own bobblehead.

The team handed out the Steve Horgan bobbleheads during Monday’s game, which made it especially fitting given the BoSox were celebrating “Law Enforcement Night” at the ballpark.
The bobblehead homage certainly was a worthy tribute to a man whose celebratory arm-raising turned into an iconic and indelible image that became intrinsically tied to the Red Sox’s ultimate run to a World Series title.
