Rays' Smyly to rehab injured shoulder, not have surgery

Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Drew Smyly won't have season-ending surgery and will instead try to rehab his torn labrum in his throwing shoulder.

Smyly told reporters Thursday at Tropicana Field that he hopes to return to the Rays' rotation as early as late July. He described the tear as mild. He was placed on the disabled list May 9.

"It's better than missing a year and a half to two years," Smyly told reporters.

Smyly said he's not considering surgery at the moment. Still, an operation could happen later if the rehab plan fails to work.
