Rangers send 12 down, including Olt
The Texas Rangers made their biggest roster cut of spring training Tuesday, dropping eight players from the major league roster to bring their camp number down to 46 players.
The biggest name cut was Mike Olt, who was sent to the Round Rock camp along with outfielder Engel Beltre, right hander Wilmer Font and left hander Jeff Beliveau.
Texas also reassigned several veteran pitchers to its minor league camp, including right handers Evan Meek, Yoshi Tateyama, Collin Balester as well as left-hander Neal Cotts.
The Olt move wasn't unexpected. The Rangers want him to play every day and there's no spot for him on the roster right now. Olt hit .194 this spring with two homers and five RBI.
None of the pitchers reassigned had impressed this spring. Tateyama had the best ERA of the bunch at 4.50 while the other three had ERAs over 6.00 and Meek's was at 10.57.
Texas also reassigned first baseman Brandon Allen, catcher Juan Apodaca, catcher Jose Felix and infielder Brandon Snyder.
