SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -- The Texas Rangers have released veteran first baseman/outfielder Brad Hawpe from his minor-league contract following the team's 6-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night.
Hawpe hit .231 with four homers and 19 RBIs for the San Diego Padres last season. He went on the disabled list on June 21 and underwent Tommy John ligament transplant surgery on his left elbow five days later.
San Diego declined his mutual option on Oct. 30, making Hawpe a free agent. He signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on January 20.
Hawpe, who was hampered by tightness in both hamstrings through the early portion of camp, went 6 for 26 with a home run this spring.
