ST. LOUIS (AP) St. Louis Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan will undergo surgery next month because of blurred vision in his left eye since late September.
Finnegan was placed on injured reserve on Saturday, a day before the Rams beat the Chicago Bears 42-21. During the bye week he got a second medical opinion and was advised to seek immediate treatment and sit out the rest of the season.
Finnegan injured the orbital bone in his left eye against the 49ers on Sept. 26 and has made one start since and missed three others with what the team reported as a hamstring injury. He played in the nickel package against the Colts before the bye.
"It's serious. But I'm stubborn, though," Finnegan said. "I wanted to stick it out and show these guys that I was tough about it. After we got a good look at it, it wasn't good. So, I have to have surgery. Hopefully, that corrects it."
Finnegan said he expects to have surgery in mid-December that will correct his double vision and improve his life after football. Finnegan, an eight-year NFL veteran, is in his third season with the Rams. He had started all but one game over the past three seasons before missing time this season.
"We didn't think it was that serious," Finnegan said. "I wanted to wait as long as I could before it got worse. I wanted to wait until after the bye week."
Finnegan said he'll "be back after a full recovery."
Trumaine Johnson took Finnegan's place in the starting lineup against Chicago, and rookie Brandon McGee was forced into action after Johnson left the game with a head injury.
