The Miami Dolphins have re-signed quarterback Matt Moore to a reported 2-year, $8 million contract.
"Matt has been a valuable contributor to the Dolphins ever since he arrived two seasons ago," said Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland in a statement. "We are happy we were able to resign him, and we think he combines with Ryan Tannehill and Pat Devlin to give us an outstanding group of quarterbacks.”
Moore, 28, chose to remain with the Dolphins as a backup rather than test the free-agent market, where he would have been one of the more coveted quarterbacks available and perhaps had the chance to compete for a starting job with another team.
In Miami, there will be no quarterback competition with Ryan Tannehill, who started all 16 games for the Dolphins as a rookie in 2012.
"Moving forward I think this team is definitely going places and there are big things to come," Moore said. "I didn’t want to miss out and not be a part of it and I wanted to continue to play with Ryan (Tannehill) and play for guys like Coach (Joe) Philbin, Sherm (offensive coordinator Mike Sherman) and Zac Taylor (quarterbacks coach)."
Moore was the primary starter for Miami in 2011, taking over from Chad Henne in Week 5 of that season and going 6-6. He threw for 2,497 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions and finished with a respectable quarterback rating of 87.1.
But the Dolphins didn't see him as their quarterback of the future and drafted Tannehill with the eighth overall pick in the 2012 draft.
Moore proved his importance as a backup in 2012, replacing an injured Tannehill in a 30-9 victory over the New York Jets on Oct. 23. He was 11 of 19 passing for 131 yards and one touchdown.
The team also signed Brian Hartline to a five-year, $30.8 million deal Friday.
Jake Long, Reggie Bush and Sean Smith are among the Dolphins currently unsigned. Players are allowed to start talking to other teams at 4 p.m. Saturday, but can't sign with another team until 4 p.m. Tuesday.
