Power outage cancels Wings' skate; tonight's game still on
DETROIT -- The Red Wings worked only off-ice Tuesday morning because the lights went out.
There was a power outage in parts of Detroit, including Joe Louis Arena.
"We still had our meetings," Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "What am I going to do? I've done all my work, so I'm going to go home.
"Didn't have to skate, didn't have to watch them, didn't have to do anything. It was perfect."
Although the lights initially went out in the Wings' dressing room, Babcock said they had a backup.
"The lights came on," Babcock said. "We also had a backup thing to turn our TVs on so we could have our meetings on anyway ... I thought that was important we got together this morning, and we'll get ready to go tonight."
The Wings' opponent Tuesday night, the Florida Panthers, opted to head back to their hotel.
The power was fully restored at the Joe at 3:30 p.m.
On Sunday, a momentary failure in an outside electrical transmission line that feeds power to Joe caused a partial outage that resulted in a 34-minute delay while the lights returned to full power.
LINEUP CHANGE
The Wings will have a slightly different lineup due to Justin Abdelkader's shoulder injury.
"(Joakim) Andersson is in the lineup, and I'll move Mule (Johan Franzen) with Z (Henrik Zetterberg) and Pav (Pavel Datsyuk)," Babcock said. "And Mule's got to be at the net front. That's a priority for him.
"If not, (Tomas) Jurco will go there. We got Jurco playing with (Darren) Helm and (Stephen) Weiss and then (Riley) Sheahan's line the same."
Even without the shoulder problem, Abdelkader wouldn't have been able to play.
"He's sick today at home, so he didn't even come in," Babcock said.
