Padres sign pitchers Chacin and Richard

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres announced today that the club has signed right-handed pitcher Jhoulys Chacin and left-handed pitcher Clayton Richard to one-year Major League contracts for the 2017 season.  Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.

Chacin, 28, split the 2016 season between the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, pitching to a combined 6-8 record with a 4.81 ERA (77 ER, 144.0 IP) and 119 strikeouts against 55 walks in 34 appearances, 22 starts. Originally signed by the Colorado Rockies as a non-drafted free agent on September 27, 2004, the 6-3, 215-pound right hander has posted a 46-57 record with a 3.94 ERA (369 ER, 842.2 IP) and 654 strikeouts against 345 walks in 163 appearances, 135 starts, over parts of eight Major League seasons.

Richard, 33, split the 2016 season between the Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres, pitching to a combined 3-4 record with a 3.33 ERA (25 ER, 67.2 IP) and 41 strikeouts against 31 walks in 36 appearances, nine starts. Originally selected by the Chicago White Sox in the eighth round of the 2005 MLB Draft, the 6-5, 242-pound left hander has posted a 53-53 record with a 4.23 ERA (415 ER, 883.1 IP) and 543 strikeouts against 301 walks in 206 appearances, 141 starts, over parts of eight Major League seasons.
