Padres pick Volquez to start on Opening Day

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Edinson Volquez will start on Opening Day for the San Diego Padres.
Manager Bud Black said Monday that Volquez will get the start in the Padres' opener next Monday in New York against the Mets.
This will be the third straight year in which Volquez will have started an opener. He pitched on Opening Day for the Reds in 2011 and for the Padres last season.
Volquez also started each round of the World Baseball Classic this month for eventual champion the Dominican Republic. He was 11-11 with a 4.14 ERA last year for the Padres.
Black said Volquez has the "experience and the mentality to handle the day and treat it like any other start."
Clayton Richard will start the second game for the Padres and later start in their home opener.
