PHOENIX (AP) -- Andrew Cashner was again victimized by a lack of run support and a couple of mistake pitches hammered for big hits.
Cashner limited Arizona to four hits in seven innings, but gave up solo homers to Aaron Hill and A.J. Pollock in the Diamondbacks' 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
"I thought the biggest thing today was my fastball command was really good," he said. "It's getting better and moving in the right direction. The run support is out of my control."
Cashner (1-6) struck out six and walked none, and lowered his ERA to 3.07. The Padres have totaled 11 runs in Cashner's six losses and been shut out twice.
"I don't think I have a mistake missed yet this year," Cashner said.
Daniel Hudson, making his first major league start since June 2012, combined with four relievers to shut down the Padres.
Hudson was limited to 56 pitches in 3 1-3 scoreless innings. He's been used out of the bullpen since returning late last season from two Tommy John surgeries.
Not announced as the starter until earlier in the day, Hudson allowed two hits and left with the bases loaded after striking out five and walking two. J.C. Ramirez, just called up from Triple-A Reno, escaped the fourth-inning jam unscathed.
"Daniel started off and did an unbelievable job," Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said. "He was electric at the start."
Ramirez (1-0) earned his first career win, allowing a run and four hits while striking out three in 2 2-3 innings. He also pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.
"We had a couple of chances we just couldn't quite cash in," Padres manager Bud Black said. "We had bases loaded a couple of times, we had a first and second. We just couldn't get the big hit."
Oliver Perez, Evan Marshall and Addison Reed combined for three innings of scoreless relief for Arizona, with Reed finishing up for his second save of the season.
Hill homered leading off in the second inning, and Pollock connected in the third.
San Diego scored on Jedd Gyorko's two-out single in the sixth that drove in Will Venable, who singled and stole second. Venable had two hits on the day and six in the three-game series.

Diamondbacks: Patrick Corbin is scheduled to pitch an extended spring training game Monday morning. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Sunday and is eligible to be activated June 4 as he returns from left elbow surgery. ... Arizona pitchers Archie Bradley (sinus fracture) and Matt Stites (right elbow inflammation) will throw in a simulated game Monday at Chase Field.

Padres: After an off day in the Pacific Northwest, the Padres open a two-game set in Seattle on Tuesday. Ian Kennedy (2-1) will make his first career appearance against the Mariners. ... James Shields (4-0) will take his regular turn Wednesday on four days' rest. Black will push back Odrisamer Despaigne following an off day Monday and go with Tyson Ross on Thursday at home against Washington, followed by Despaigne or Cashner on Friday.
Diamondbacks: Josh Collmenter (3-3) starts Monday against Washington. He is 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA in his last four starts. The Nationals announced their three starters for the series: Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez.
