Week two of the college football season featured standout performances throughout the country, and players from four different Ohio colleges have been chosen as MAC players of the week.
From the conference: East DivisionOffensive Player of the Week: Bowling Green QB Matt JohnsonSophomore quarterback Matt Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa.) made his first career start and went 19-for-25 for 357 yards and two touchdowns as Bowling Green defeated Kent State 41-22. Johnson led the team from the starting, guiding the Falcons on a nine-play, 77 yard scoring drive on the opening possession of the game. He also led a drive late in the first half that concluded with a seven-yard touchdown pass that gave the Falcons the lead for good. In the third quarter, he found Ryan Burbrink for a 92-yard touchdown pass for the third-longest pass in Bowling Green history. His 357 yards are the most for a MAC quarterback in a game this year as are his 374 total offensive yards. Defensive Player of the Week: Ohio LB Jovon JohnsonSophomore linebacker Jovon Johnson (Solon, Ohio) made his first career start and helped anchor an Ohio defensive unit which limited North Texas to just 2.7 yards rushing. Johnson registered a pair of solo tackles, had one fumble recovery and had an interception returned 42 yards for a touchdown, which gave the Bobcats a 21-7 lead in the first half. Special Teams Player of the Week: Miami P Zac MurphySenior punter Zac Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) had 11 punts for 524 yards (47.6 avg.) at Kentucky. Murphy drilled four punts inside the opposing 20-yard line and had another four punts travel over 50 yards, including a 66-yard punt, the second longest of his career. Murphy also helped setup the RedHawks lone score. Late in the first quarter he boomed a 52-yard punt which was fielded at the Kentucky 5-yard line. Senior Collin Boucher forced a fumble on the return, with Chris Wade going six yards for the score. West DivisionOffensive Player of the Week: Ball State QB Keith WenningSenior quarter back Keith Wenning (Coldwater, Ohio) completed 23-of-32 passes for 325 yards with two touchdowns in Ball State’s 40-14 victory over Army. Wenning now has 62 career touchdowns, trailing only the 74 by Nate Davis (2006-08) on Ball State’s career list. Wenning has accounted for seven touchdowns through two games with five through the air and two on the ground. He topped the 300-yard passing mark for the eighth time in his career, and the 250-yard plateau for the 13th time in his four seasons. Defensive Player of the Week: Ball State DT Nathan OllieSenior defensive tackle Nathan Ollie (Chicago, Ill.) tallied eight tackles with one tackle for loss and one sack in Ball State’s 40-14 victory over Army. Ollie helped the Ball State defense limit Army to 7-of-20 passing for 76 yards. Special Teams Player of the Week: Toledo K Jeremiah DetmerJunior kicker Jeremiah Detmer (Hilliard, Ohio) was a perfect 3-of-3 on field goals, pushing his consecutive field goal total to 22, one shy of the Toledo record held by Alex Steigerwald in 2007-08. Detmer connected on field goals of 24, 46 and 41 yards. He also punted for the first time in his career, averaging 30.0 on three punts.
