High school football fans all over the Southern California were giddy about a potential Serra vs. St. John Bosco matchup last season. The only way that would have been possible was in the Open Division regional game. To get there, both teams had to win their respective divisions.
St. John Bosco held up their end of the bargain by taking the PAC-5. Serra, however, was upset in the Western Division final. Although this season, a Serra vs. St. John Bosco tilt wouldn't garner nearly as much hype, not as many stars would have to align for the teams to meet in the postseason with both members the PAC-5 ... No. 5 on our list of "15 Reasons to Get Excited for the 2014 CIF-SS High School Football Season."
Serra is moving on up along with Chaminade to join the Mission League -- a seven-team league that should ultra competitive with squads fighting for three automatic berths.
Also joining the in-crowd are the former kings of the Inland Division -- Corona Centennial. The Huskies have been a perennial title contender under Matt Logan and will now try their hand at the PAC-5.
The Trinity League will be as tough as ever with Servite, St. John Bosco, Mater Dei, and JSerra preseason top-10 teams in the state.
Centennial, out of the Big VIII, along with the aforementioned Mission and Trinity Leagues, join the Moore League and the now four-team Marmonte League to make up the PAC-5. Fourteen playoff berths will be automatic and only two at-large berths will be awarded.
