Joe Flacco made his critics look like fools last season. During a radio interview in April 2012, the Baltimore Ravens quarterback said he thought he was the best quarterback in the NFL. After being mocked for making such a statement, Flacco went ahead and led the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory.
Former NFL defensive back Solomon Wilcots said he thinks Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo could be on the verge of following in Flacco's footsteps.
"I think the strength is in the quarterback and in the tight end," Wilcots said recently on the NFL Network, according to The Dallas Morning News. "There’s no doubt, I think Tony Romo is one season away from being our next Joe Flacco. This time last year, everyone was very critical of Joe Flacco – he can’t do this, he can’t do that. And that’s what you hear about Tony Romo. All he does is he holds every franchise record at the quarterback position for the Dallas Cowboys."
As most analysts have pointed out, Wilcots mentioned that the Cowboys need to upgrade their offensive line. However, he also noted that Romo’s mobility and the presence of tight end Jason Witten make the Cowboys capable of a breakthrough season.
“Tony Romo can make one guy miss, you can scheme one guy off the corner,” Wilcots said. “He’s athletic enough to extend plays. I think they’ve got to get better at the interior portion of their o-line.”
For Wilcots to be correct the Cowboys will need to add at least one new starter along the offensive line and the transition to a 4-3 defensive scheme will need to be smooth and effective. It would also help for the team to have better luck in the health department than they did in 2012.
