New Jayhawks coach Beaty signs 24-member recruiting class

The timing of David Beaty's hire didn't give the Kansas coaching staff many days to secure a recruiting class.

"It was like drinking out of a fire hose for a bit," Beaty said.

Beaty announced a 24-member class on National Signing Day on Wednesday that he hopes will immediately impact a program coming off a 3-9 season. Among them are eight junior college players.

"When I put a smile on my face this morning, it's because I'm really excited about these guys," Beaty said.

One of the most noteworthy signings was from Chase Harrell, a wide receiver from Huffman High. Harrell notched 1,741 yards on 103 receptions with 18 touchdowns during his senior year. The first letter of intent faxed on National Signing Day was from Marnez Ogletree, a junior defensive back coming out of Fullerton College.

Beaty thanked defensive coordinator Clint Bowen and recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell for keeping in contact with the kids who were "hard to hold on to."

"Without those guys, there wouldn't be half these dudes on this page," Beaty said.

The signing class has two quarterbacks: Carter Stanley out of Vero Beach, Florida, and Ryan Willis from Overland Park, Kansas. Beaty said Stanley is a true dual-threat quarterback.

Beaty emphasized that no matter the standing -- freshman, junior college transfer or senior -- the best players will play and gave the analogy "the cream always rises."
