Nats' Werth leaves $100 tip on $180 tab while on assignment

There are few things that fans find more strangely interesting than documentary evidence of when a millionaire professional athlete leaves a huge tip following a meal at a restaurant. Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth recently became the latest to join the pantheon of overly generous-when-giving-a-gratuity greats.

Werth, currently on assignment with the Syracuse Chiefs as he continues to rehab a broken wrist suffered in May, was in Buffalo along with his Triple-A teammates on Monday to take on the Buffalo Bison. After the game, Werth dined at The Black Sheep restaurant. After his meal, the star left a whopping $100 tip on his $180.53 tab.

Local actress Jessica Wegrzyn, who works as a server at the eatery, posted a photo to her Instagram account documenting Werth’s generosity, while also making note of the ballplayer’s fantastic facial hair.

“Thanks Jayson Werth,” Wegrzyn wrote. “You have a real cool beard and you’re real nice and I’ve been told you’re a real good baseball player.”

She’s correct on all counts, obviously. The Nationals will hold a Jayson Werth Chia Pet promotion in August in praise of the ballplayer’s majestic beard, for crying out loud, one of many promotions that have been held celebrating Werth’s facial hair.

Leaving a $100 tip clearly won’t make a huge dent in Werth’s bank account — he’s currently playing on a seven-year, $126 million contract he signed in 2011 — but going above and beyond by leaving such a generous gratuity nevertheless demonstrates that he’s a pretty nice guy, much like Phil Mickelson and Peyton Manning, among others. After all, there have been several occasions where a millionaire athlete left a horrible tip, such as the time LeSean McCoy left a $.20 tip on a $61 bill, so not every pro athlete goes out of his way to make a server’s day.
