MLB, Cardinals not dwelling on Lester possibly doctoring baseballs

If Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester had a foreign substance in his glove during his Game 1 start Wednesday night, Major League Baseball isn't too concerned.  

"There were no complaints from the Cardinals and the umpires never detected anything indicating a foreign substance throughout the game," MLB said in a statement released Thursday morning.

A Cardinals farmhand, Tyler Melling, posted a photo Wednesday night on his Twitter page that showed a light spot in Lester's glove. Along with the photo, Melling tweeted, "Jon Lester using a little Vaseline inside the glove tonight?"

The post had been removed from Melling's Twitter page by late Thursday morning.

Adding to the intrigue was a Vine video posted that shows Lester rubbing the suspicious spot on his glove with two left fingers.

Neither the Melling photo nor the Vine provides convincing evidence that Lester was breaking any rules, but they do show enough to raise the possibility that he was putting something in his glove besides a baseball.

It sounds like the issue is a non-starter with MLB and the Cardinals.

"We cannot draw any conclusions from this video," MLB said in its statement.

"It's something that arose in social media and not from our players or manager or our coaching staff. To me it does not represent a concern," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
