For the second season in a row, the Michigan basketball team has been hit by a major offseason injury.
A year after the back injury that cost Mitch McGary most of what turned out to be his last college season, the Wolverines announced Monday that Caris LeVert is going to be out for most of the summer with a foot injury.
"Caris underwent surgery today for a stress fracture of his foot at the University of Michigan hospital," John Beilein said in a statement. "He is doing well and we expect him to make a full recovery in about 8 to 10 weeks. We are confident he will participate in our late summer training and play in our August trip to Europe."
If that timeline holds, LeVert should be fine by the beginning of the season, but there will be uncomfortable echoes of McGary's injury, which lingered for the whole year.
With McGary, Nik Stauskas and Glenn Robinson III all headed for the NBA, Jon Horford going to Florida and Jordan Morgan graduating, LeVert is expected to lead the Wolverines in the fall. Last season, his game took a huge step forward, as he averaged 12.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists to help Michigan reach the Elite Eight. His 40.8 percent 3-point shooting was crucial in keeping teams from focusing simply on stopping Stauskas and Robinson.
