Mercury re-sign guard Riley to fill roster
The Phoenix Mercury re-signed guard Andrea Riley on Saturday.
Riley gives the Mercury 10 available players. They had been playing short-handed due to a season-ending injury to Penny Taylor (torn left anterior cruciate ligament) and strained left hip flexor that has sidelined Diana Taurasi indefinitely. League rules allow for an exemption to the 11-player roster limit if a team falls below 10 players due to injury for an extended period of time.
Riley was originally acquired by the Mercury on January 12 in a trade that sent Temeka Johnson to the Tulsa Shock. She was then waived on May 16, the final day of training camp. The 5-foot-5 point guard recorded 10 points and six assists in her one preseason game with Phoenix.
Riley will be available for the Mercury’s home game Sunday against the Shock, for whom she played 33 games in 2011, averaging 6.0 points and 1.8 assists.
