SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Chargers running back Ryan Mathews hopes he can play in the season opener after going through individual drills for the first time since breaking his collarbone Aug. 9.

Mathews caught passes and did other individual work. He didn't participate in team drills but says he did "mental stuff."

Mathews will have to prove he can take a hit before being able to suit up Monday night at Oakland.

The third-year back was hurt on his first carry in the exhibition opener. He's said all along that he's a fast healer and wants to be ready for the opener.

Mathews was a Pro Bowler last year after rushing for 1,091 yards.
