Marlins select contract of left-hander Lazo, place Kelly on DL
The Miami Marlins selected the contract of left-hander Raudel Lazo and transferred utility player Don Kelly to the 60-day disabled list prior to Wednesday's game against the Atlanta Braves.
Lazo, a 26-year-old southpaw from Cuba, went 3-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 18 games with Double-A Jacksonville. He began the season with Single-A Jupiter, going 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in eight outings to warrant a promotion.
Kelly, a member of the Opening Day roster, sustained a right fourth finger fracture on April 12 after just two games and one plate appearance. While rehabbing in the minors, he felt discomfort in his throwing arm that turned out to be a right elbow ligament tear. He underwent Tommy John surgery in mid-July.
Rosters expanded on Tuesday, and calling up Lazo has become Miami's first move. With most arms on the pitching staff reaching career highs in innings, the Marlins could use help during the final month. Between Jupiter and Jacksonville, Lazo has thrown 41 1/3 frames in 2015. His personal mark is 59 1/3 in 2012.
Right-hander Jarred Cosart will likely return this weekend, while ace Jose Fernandez and setup man Carter Capps expect to be back by season's end.
