DENVER (AP) -- Ichiro Suzuki got his 2,999th career hit in the major leagues Saturday night, then missed a chance to add a milestone hit.

Suzuki beat out an infield single as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning for the Miami Marlins against Colorado. He stayed in the game and batted again in the ninth, but grounded out to pitcher Scott Oberg.

Oberg fielded the one-hopper and dropped the ball as he turned toward second base for a possible forceout. Oberg recovered in time to throw out Suzuki in a close play.

Suzuki ended an 0-for-11 slump with his hit. The 42-year-old Japanese outfielder is in his 16th season in the majors and trying to become the 30th player to reach 3,000.
