The Orlando Magic have waived reserve point guard Jason Williams, GM Otis Smith announced Wednesday night.
Williams signed a one-year deal with the Magic in August, but missed training camp while recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, taking away his opportunity to compete with Chris Duhon for the backup spot behind Jameer Nelson.
Williams then was relegated to a fourth-string role after the Magic acquired Gilbert Arenas from Washington on Dec. 18.
The veteran, who is in his 12th year in the league, has played in just one game since the trade, totaling five minutes of playing time. He played in 15 games before Arenas joined the team, and played a season-high 23 minutes when Nelson missed a November game against Atlanta.
Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said after Monday's game against Detroit that, while he feels for his little-used reserves, he was going to have to deactivate one of them
