Marquette and Buzz Williams received some good news early Sunday morning when Luke Fischer announced he's transferring to play for the Golden Eagles.
The Germantown High School product appeared in 13 games for Indiana this season before announcing he was leaving the school last week. A four-star recruit in the class of 2013 according to Scout.com, the 6-foot-11 Fischer averaged 2.8 points and 2.1 rebounds over 10 minutes per game for the Hoosiers.
"Luke has decided to withdraw from Indiana and pursue another educational and basketball opportunity," Indiana coach Tom Crean said in a statement released by the school last week. "He explained to us he is looking for a different fit for him. We hate to see a fine young man like Luke leave, but he has made his decision and we wish the entire Fischer family well."
Fischer said he narrowed down his transfer options to Marquette, UW-Milwaukee and Creighton before settling on the Golden Eagles. He wasn't considering Big Ten schools, something he said was out of respect for Crean and Indiana.
"I am excited to say I will be transferring to Marquette University to play for Coach Williams and the Golden Eagles," Fischer tweeted Sunday. "Marquette allows me to be closer to home while playing at the highest level for a great academic institution."
Because he left Indiana before the start of the second semester this year, Fischer will be eligible to play for the Golden Eagles at the start of the second semester during the 2014-15 season. The addition of Fischer is a big get for Williams, as Marquette is set to lose big men Chris Otule, Davante Gardner and Jamil Wilson to graduation after this season.
Scout.com's 79th best recruit in the class of 2013, Fischer was named Mr. Basketball by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association last year. Fischer averaged 21.3 points and 9.5 rebounds in his senior season, leading Germantown to its second straight state championship.
An issue comes up next season as Marquette is at 13 scholarships with Fischer and four-star commit Malek Harris still unsigned. If Harris does sign in the spring, the Golden Eagles are over the limit and one of this year's scholarship players would have to leave the school. Transfers happen all the time and over signing isn't rare, but Harris' situation is one to follow.
