He was arguably one of the best college football players ever, and you've probably never heard of him. What you also probably haven't heard is his tragic story.
From 2002 to 2006, Cullen Finnerty led Grand Valley State University, to three Division II national championships, with a career record of 51-4, throwing for over 11,000 yards and rushing for over 2,000. His style of play was extremely physical, he was as tough as he was talented.
Finnerty found brief stints with the Broncos and Ravens, but ultimately, chose a life that focused on a white-collar career and his family. He was as much of a superhero to his wife and children as he was on the football field.
But on Memorial Weekend of 2013, in Baldwin, Michigan, all of that changed. Finnerty went missing in the woods near the lake and eventually was found dead.
In the wake of his death, the question of 'why' was constant. How did the chain of events of his last hours alive unfold? What was the cause? And could any parts of the tragedy be linked to his football career?
