Like Oregon, La Mirada ups the ante with uniforms

It started with Oregon and has since resonated through all of college football.

Uniforms.

Every time you turn on a game, it appears some team is wearing some type of different outfit combination.

Even USC wasn't immune to it last season, opting for fancy school-colored shoes and socks while turning away from their traditional black and white. (USC will reportedly return to traditional black and white for the 2013 season).

Notre Dame is expected to wear an alternate uniform for its matchup with Arizona State at AT&T Stadium in October. Nebraska has a black uniform with a big, red "N" on the front.

Times are a changing, and it's even coming to the high school ranks.

Take La Mirada High, for example.

You could that argue no team in the Southern Section had an offseason as impressive as the Matadores. There was a buzz surrounding the program.

However, as much as fans have talked about the talent the Matadores will put on the field in 2013 with the likes of tight end Tyler Luatua, Oklahoma-committed wide receiver Dallis Todd, and 2015 quarterback Kevin Dillman, there was talk about what they will be wearing.

In response, the football program released a YouTube video showcasing its uniform combinations for 2013. At just over two minutes long, the video displays 14 sets of uniforms and two helmets, and already has over 26,000 views.

The uniforms aren't very flashy, taking on the "old school" approach of head coach Mike Moschetti, however it's something that has gotten the community very excited.

"We came up with the idea that we were going to wear black jerseys, white jerseys, blue, and gold," Moschetti said. "We got five different sets of pants. It's something that excites the kids and excites the parents and the school, and so we made a video about it to kind of bring excitement to La Mirada."

Moschetti made it clear the program wasn't using the uniforms or the video as a recruiting tool. However, it makes a loud statement.

La Mirada is surrounded by a ton of private schools – Bishop Amat, St. John Bosco, Servite and Mater Dei. The uniform combos show that kids in the La Mirada community don't have to go to a private school to have nice equipment.

For the Matadores, to get to the point where they could make a video showcasing 14 different uniform combinations is something that has accumulated over the years.

They added black jerseys, black and gold pants this offseason. Next year it will be something else.

Moschetti credits the community, alums, and the program's fundraising efforts for allowing them to take this step, because in today's age, uniforms speak volumes.

"It's the culture that we live in," Moschetti said.

The La Mirada head coach admitted he was somewhat inspired by the run Oregon has been on in recent years.

When you look at the talent that has gone to Eugene recently, more than likely it was two things that drew them there – facilities and the uniforms.
