One the of the persisting stories since offseason workouts has been wide receiver Dez Bryant's contract situation. The fifth-year Pro Bowler will become an unrestricted free agent at season's end, an outcome no one in the front office or in Bryant's camp wants.
Amid all the headlines and attention, Cowboys owner, president, and general manager Jerry Jones doesn't see it as distracting.
"It's not a distraction at all," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] on Friday.
"It's obviously didn't distract Dez, and it doesn't distract us."
Jones does appreciate the recognition that Bryant's contract negotiations are getting, because he fully understands the extension plays a large part in the financial maneuvering of the team in coming years.
"It's a meaningful contract to the degree that it does, and will, impact our financial management of our salary cap, which a big part of what helps get a good team on the field," Jones said. "So, it deserves the kind of attention that we're giving it."
Jones, who has owned the Cowboys since 1989, doesn't see any difference from Bryant's contract negotiations than those of stars receiver Michael Irvin and right tackle Erik Williams.
Reports surfaced on Oct. 27 that Bryant fired agents Eugene Parker and David Wells. On Nov. 2, Roc Nation, Jay-Z's sports brand, announced Bryant had joined them, though the CAA team of Tom Condon, Ben Dover, and Jimmy Sexton will handle the actual negotiations.
"We've communicated," said Jones about Bryant's new agents. "That's the best I could do there, but we have communicated."
