Bodemeister, the second-place finisher this year in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, has been retired to stud after an injury to his left shoulder was found.

WinStar Farm announced the decision Tuesday and said the colt is expected to fully recovery, though not soon enough for this fall's Breeders' Cup.

Trainer Bob Baffert said in a statement from WinStar that Bodemeister, who is named for Baffert's son Bode, likely was hurt recently during training at Del Mar Racetrack. Baffert said the horse stumbled significantly and threw his exercise rider to the ground.

Bodemeister, who won the Arkansas Derby in April by 9-1/2 lengths, retires with earnings of $1,304,800 for owners Zayat Stables LLC and Mike and Tiffany Moreno. He won 2 of 6 lifetime starts.
