Indians invite Michael Martinez to spring training

The Indians on Wednesday announced they have signed infielder Michael Martinez to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Martinez spent most of last season with the Pirates organization. He appeared in 91 games at Triple-A Indianapolis, batting .244 with 13 extra-base hits and 32 RBI. He also had two stints with the Pirates, batting .128 in 26 games. Martinez split time between second base and the outfield.

Martinez, 32, began in his career in the Nationals organization in 2005 before being selected by the Phillies in the Rule V draft in 2010. He spent three seasons with the Phillies before going to the Pirates last year.

With the move, the Indians have 21 invites to spring training, including five infielders -- Audy Ciriaco, Francisco Lindor, Ryan Rohlinger, Jerry Sands and Martinez. Position players report to spring training on Feb. 22.
