Huskies get a jump on Pac-10 competition

In 44 hours, Washington went from on-paper favorite to overwhelming real-time favorite to repeat as Pac-10 basketball champions. The Huskies stamped themselves as the team to chase by opening conference play with a sweep of USC and UCLA in Los Angeles, which figures to be the most difficult road trip in the league.

Huskies' power forward Matthew Bryan-Amaning had 39 points and 18 rebounds in an overtime victory at USC and a relatively easy 11-point win at UCLA, and the most impressive part of his play was that it came against two of the biggest and most physical frontlines in the league.

"That's a championship team that wins games like this," Huskies senior guard Venoy Overton said after the 73-67 victory over USC. "Power teams in conferences around the country, teams like Duke, they win close games on the road like this, when you have to grind it out."
